BEING HUMAN

Exhibition Proposal and Design

A speculative exhibition design and proposal for the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). It features a toolbox of visual elements that can be applied to a broad range of promotional materials. It also includes a basic plan of the visitor’s experience in the exhibition.

“Being Human” is an art and design exhibition that explores the multifaceted meaning of what it means to be human. By presenting an array of art and design works, it invites the audience to reflect on their past and present choices, needs, and wants, and think about how they would like to proceed and possibly live differently in the future. Ultimately, the exhibition aims to empower the audience to be brave and live the life they want.

Considering that there are two levels of “being human”, the first is our physical existence of being human, and the second is a more abstract idea that involves things such as moral, spirituality, and identity, three abstract illustrations based on tangible human body parts- brain, heart, and cell were created. These illustrations are used as the hero images for the campaign.

EXHIBITION DESIGN

A part of the project is to envision the visitor’s experience. The exhibition will take up the entire NGV 3rd floor exhibition area. (The image above shows NGV’s exhibition floor plan.) The audience would first go through the introductory space, then to either side of the exhibition.

Low Light Area - Prompt questions such as “who are you?”, “where are you heading?” will be displayed in neon lights. Artworks and designs that are supposed to be exhibited in low light situations would also be displayed in this area.

Comment wall - At the end of the exhibition, audiences are challenged to reflect and note down their experience and thoughts and stick it to the designated exhibition wall. NGV will then commission artists and designers to create artworks based on the audience’s responses. The artwork will be displayed in the later days of the exhibition.
